about

Listening to the Ground marks an important time in my journey as a spirit being. One the one hand, I had ignored, for many years, the gift of healing as a sangoma. On the other hand, I was dealing with religious conflict having brought up in a Christian home.

In this sense, this record symbolises the acceptance of the gods in the underworlds and cultivates a way of listening to them. Thus, listening to the ground is a metaphor that I created to deal with issues of geo-politics and what it means to be in a former colonial zone where important memories have been eroded. As a response, listening goes beyond the eyes but to our feet as we walk in the lands of our forefathers/mothers we begin to cite texts from beneath our feet.

This record is a ritual honouring and paying gratitude to my ancestors for the gift. In my native toungue (IsiZulu) we call it 'ukwthwasa'
